Derby Skate Park
Date
August, 1976
Location
508 Woodland Way, Santa Cruz, CA
As one of the first public skateparks ever built, Derby Skatepark holds a foundational place in skatepark history. Created in response to a rising demand for dedicated skate spaces during the early years of the sport, the park’s simple snake-run layout and flowing lines have endured for generations. It set an early precedent for concrete design, showcasing how terrain could guide creative movement rather than mimic existing structures. Remarkably, the park remains in active daily use more than 50 years after its construction, a testament to its durability and cultural relevance. Derby has become a point of pilgrimage for skaters and is a clear example of longevity through thoughtful design.
